Already in 2021 Stadtwerke Dillingen (Dillingen municipal utilities) have started expanding their own LoRaWAN® network together with ZENNER as a partner. Since then, together with ZENNER, they have already implemented a large number of smart use cases in buildings and in the city. The network is to be expanded in the future and be supplemented by further solutions.

Dillingen municipal utilities

At the time, Stadtwerke Dillingen decided in favor of a LoRaWAN® network in order to drive forward the energy transition and make processes more efficient.

“LoRaWAN® is a cost-effective and sustainable investment. There are plenty of useful applications at the municipal utilities, such as the wireless reading of water and heat meters, heat cost allocators or smoke detectors”,

reports Norman Greiner, responsible for the expansion of the LoRaWAN® network of Stadtwerke Dillingen.

Two years ago the municipal utilites began expanding the network. After an initial six gateways, nine gateways have now been installed and are in operation. During this time, plenty of use cases have been realised with very good results.

On the administration building of Stadtwerke Dillingen in the Feldstraße a weather station was installed, which regularly transmits the current weather data via LoRaWAN®. In the customer centre, the meeting room and the cash desk there are also CO2 room sensors, which continously measure the air quality. Employees are notified via e-mail if there is a change in air quality and must open the windows to ventilate accordingly. Outside the building LoRaWAN® radio water meters were installed in 20 shafts. This means that the shaft no longer needs to be entered for a reading, which saves time and money and reduces the workload for employees.

A smart parking project with a camera-based solution based on LoRaWAN® was also realised together with ZENNER. The utilisation of the parking spaces is recorded by a camera, which forwards the collected data to a PC. There the actual occupancy status of the car parks is converted and finally transferred to element suite via LoRaWAN®. From there the information is transferred to the customer’s backend system. The LoRaWAN® network data colleted from all use cases at Stadtwerke Dillingen is processed in element suite. Measured values can be analysed there and corresponding rules for automation, such as alarm notifications via e-mail when the air quality changes, can be created.

Project partners at Stadtwerke Dillingen

For all smart cities use cases ZENNER supports Stadtwerke Dillingen in the realisation and implementation. ZENNER places particular emphasis on intensive customer support and good planning of IoT projects.

“And of course it also depends on the customer. Here in Dillingen – and that makes us all the happier – we see a high willingness to innovate also for the testing of new projects and new use cases”,

tells Patrick Leiner, project manager IoT Utility & Public at ZENNER.

In the future Stadtwerke Dillingen plan the densification of the LoRaWAN® network and the implementation of other new use cases, such as monitoring and controlling the temperature in municipal buildings via radiator thermostats and the installation of fill level indicators in waste bins (smart waste). Street lighting is also to be equipped with LoRaWAN® ripple control receivers (smart lighting) in future and indoor air monitoring is to be realised in public buildings.

“Furthermore we want to install smoke detectors and equip transformer stations with LoRaWAN® technology”,

explains Norman Greiner.

Stadtwerke Dillingen is able to implement new solutions into the existing LoRaWAN® network again and again and use the technology sustainably and smartly for themselves and the citizens of Dillingen.
