Enlit 2023: ZENNER will present digital measuring technology and sustainable solutions

Digitalisation and the topic of climate neutrality are increasingly also affecting energy suppliers and grid operators. With the EU taxonomy and the Green Deal, legislators are paving the way for a new understanding of sustainable energy consumption. Enlit Europe 2023 is taking place in Paris from 28 to 30 November, and ZENNER International GmbH & Co. KG will be presenting their digital measuring technology for water and gas, as well as smart building solutions with the Internet of Things (IoT).

Saarbrücken, November 2023. The energy transition and the goal of climate neutrality require all areas of life in cities and municipalities to be digitalised. For energy suppliers and grid operators, this means quickly implementing innovative, new solutions. The objective is to precisely record water and gas consumption, avoid network losses and provide an efficient supply of water and energy in a way that conserves resources.

Maximum consumption transparency for the water supply

Using digital measuring technology offers an array of opportunities to implement the current requirements laid down in the German National Water Strategy. At Enlit, ZENNER will be presenting a portfolio of digital products that can be used to this end. The company has the bulk water meter IUW and the new domestic water meter IUWS – brand-new ultrasonic meters that combine maximum precision with state-of-the-art communication technology. Both can transmit meter data via wireless M-Bus radio or with LoRaWAN^® via the Internet of Things.

“When it comes to the digital technology spectrum, the Internet of Things in particular has proven to be especially powerful and flexible. In total, more than 7 million measuring instruments and sensors are already transmitting data via ZENNER’s LoRaWAN^® network today. The majority of these are water meters, heat meters and other measuring instruments,” reports Boris Stöckermann, Business Unit Manager for Business Development & Digital Solutions at Minol-ZENNER-Group. ZENNER’s LoRaWAN^® network is now available in a total of 15 countries.

Measuring technology for the gas supply

ZENNER has also been one of the largest gas meter manufacturers in the world for years now. By the end of 2023, the company will have produced and sold around eight million gas meters worldwide. At Enlit, ZENNER will be presenting their brand-new diaphragm gas meters in meter sizes G4 and G6, approved by the German Association for Gas and Water (DVGW) and in line with MID. Dieter Sucietto, Head of the Gas Division at ZENNER, explains: “With a state-of-the-art, efficient production facility, ZENNER is able to produce meters that meet the quality standards expected by gas suppliers and the industry.”

When it comes to measuring technology, current market developments show that having the right overall package will be more important than ever in the future. A modern gas meter must be stable in the long-term and meet the highest technical quality and safety standards. Meters must also be able to communicate whilst being economically attractive at the same time. In order to meet the regulatory requirements laid down in the German Act on the Digitisation of the Energy Transition (GNDEW), ZENNER gas meters can also be retrofitted for connection to a smart meter gateway (SMGW).

LoRaWAN^® and wireless M-Bus: drivers of digitalisation

With more than 350 successful IoT projects, ZENNER has a wealth of experience in the field of smart cities and the use of wireless technology, such as LoRaWAN^® or wireless M-Bus. LoRaWAN^® is a communication protocol that is already being widely used today and was developed specifically for IoT applications.

“In the smart cities of today, it’s no longer a question of whether LoRaWAN^® should be used, but which LoRaWAN^® solutions should be implemented,” explains Stöckermann. In an already existing LoRaWAN^® network with the corresponding gateways, existing solutions, such as smart metering, can be scaled quickly and economically, or new IoT solutions, such as CO₂ monitoring, can be added fuss-free.
